Italian Archaeological Sites UNESCO World Heritage Sites

International relations and cultural exchanges are deeply rooted in history and represent one of the main tools for promoting dialogue, understanding and peace between peoples.
The archaeological, historical, artistic and natural testimonies represent an extensive and varied palimpsest on a global scale, as well reflected in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Italy recognizes great importance to this heritage by committing itself to its protection, conservation and valorization both at a national and global level.
Our country is a major supporter of multilateral cultural cooperation and an active organizer of archaeological, ethnoanthropological and conservation missions around the world contributing to a substantial improvement in relations between States.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Convention for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted by UNESCO in 1972 to ensure the identification, protection, safeguarding and transmission to future generations of cultural and natural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value.
The assets inscribed on the World Heritage List can be cultural, natural or mixed and must meet precise selection criteria.
Cultural heritage includes monuments, artistic or architectural works, archaeological sites and historic centres; natural assets consist of sites of exceptional scientific, geological or aesthetic value and in places that are particularly significant for the survival of animal and plant species threatened with extinction.
